One of my best friends lives in Chicago and has for over ten years now, but has been my friend since meeting at youth group back in January of 2000, only 3 days after I met Rob (who also attended the youth group).  I have now seen her three times in person during these past ten years.

The last time I saw Mellie, Micah was only a babe in arms.  My boys really had no memories of her.  When I told them that we would go to the comic book store with her, they were so excited!  We also went to a cafe and the park.

Mellie had very long dreadlocks for quite a few years.  She got them cut out and had a Mohawk cut only a day or two before we saw her.  I told her I would photograph her new haircut for her.  She told me she’d like that.  I only took a few shots (compared to hour long sessions I’ve had taking photos of families in the past).

The few hours I spent with Mellie really were too short, but at the same time it is as if no time had passed since the last time we were together, though much has changed for each of us.  I like that there are some people in my life that are like that, whom I am comfortable enough to be around that the time apart melts away. Now she is back in Chicago, but we can continue to be close despite our distance.
